When seeing a friend on BoingBoing isn't a good thing.
A few days ago I posted that someone I had gone to college with (but didn't really know very well) was the big BoingBoing.net link-of-the-moment.
Last night an old co-worker had the same honor. Unfortunately, it wasn't any reason (at least to me) to celebrate.
I used to work with with Patrick 'TransFatty' Obrien (or Fatty as he preferred everyone to call him ) at a design agency in NYC. Patrick did freelance film directing and 3d renderings -- he handled a ton of our industrial videos. When his solo-stuff started picking up, he worked with us less and less. The last time I saw Patrick was at a party in early 2005 , checking my email archive, the last time we wrote to one another was February of that year.
Then I see a picture of him being his bad-ass self on BoingBoing. And as I read the caption, my jaw dropped. http://www.boingboing.net/2006/12/17/beer_in_a_feeding_tu.html
Patrick was diagnosed with ALS shortly after I saw him last.
I got in touch w/a few friends who knew him much better than I did. They all thought I knew, and were shocked I didn't. Luckily, they've been in constant contact with him and could answer questions.
As always Patrick is proving himself to be a complete badass. He's turned his illness into a documentary , a foundation, and a cause.
I really don't know what to say, except to click the link below.
